Phillip Achenbach

Phillip David Achenbach, 83, of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away at 12:30 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025, at his home.

He was born December 5, 1941, in Taylorville, Illinois, a son of the late Roy M. and Dorothy Mae (Poor) Achenbach.

He married the love of his life, Joan Marie (Reinhardt) Achenbach on May 11, 1968, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Granite City and she survives.

Phillip retired in 2001 from Ameren after 34 years of dedicated service as a machinist with Union Electric and Ameren. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a faithful member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Tri-Cities Council #1098 in Granite City. He was also a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local #148 and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He was very patriotic and was especially proud of his military service. Phillip was a talented woodworker and was a member of a woodcarving club in Glen Carbon and also in Texas. He enjoyed his days of playing golf and loved his days of camping and traveling with his wife. He cherished his children and grandchildren and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with family and friends.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a daughter, Amy Girardier of St. Clair, Missouri; a son and daughter-in-law, Eric R. and Tina Achenbach of Fenton, Missouri; six grandchildren, Ryan Antoff, Riley Girardier, Savannah Achenbach, Nicholas Achenbach, Emily Eimer and Jacqueline Eimer; a brother and sister-in-law, Levoy “Lee” and Margaret Achenbach of Fitchburg, Massachusetts; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Donna Jones of Glen Carbon and Sue and Gary Riess of Saddlebrook, Missouri; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mark and Alice Reinhardt of Murray, Kentucky; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark D. Achenbach; a sister, Jeaneen Achenbach; a brother, Fred Achenbach; two brothers-in-law, Jim Jones and James Reinhardt and a sister-in-law, Janice Houlihan.

In celebration of his life, a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 N. Main Street in Glen Carbon at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025, with Father Patrick Gibbons as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Disabled American Veterans or to Masses.
