In loving memory of George E. Smith, 81, who passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2025, at his residence.
He was born on October 8, 1943, in Alton, the son of Harry F. and Eva M. (Merekley) Smith, Sr. George married Rebecca "Becky" Newell on February 4, 1977, in Edwardsville. She survives.
George retired from Archer Daniels Midland Co, in Alton. He was a subscriber to many charitable organizations and was an avid gun enthusiast. He loved his family and his dogs, and enjoyed reading and working on cars when he was younger. George was a good husband and father and will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, Becky, he is survived by a son, Nathaniel A. Smith; a sister, Marie (Danny) Fester; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Harry F. Smith, Jr., and Bruce A. Smith.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 9:30 am until time of service at 11 am, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. Pastor Kale Hanson and Pastor Brandon Metcalf will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto is entrusted with final arrangements.
