Robert Angleton

Robert Lee “Bob” Angleton, 74, passed away Monday, May 19, 2025 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 14, 1950 in Alton, he was a son of CD and Pauline L. (Shewmake) Angleton.

He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Bob was athletic and very active in sports activities. He had an intense passion for everything he did for the people in his community and his family. A main focus in his life was caring for the less fortunate.

He was hired Jan. 15, 1975 as the Parks and Recreation Director for the Village of East Alton, eventually retiring May 31, 2001 as Public Works Director. An 18-year cancer survivor, he was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton and was a die-hard Los Angeles Dodgers fan. He was Past President of the East Alton Rotary Club, and was a proud recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award for service above self.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Jo (Chamness) Angleton of East Alton; his son, Matthew (Katie) Angleton of Alton; his granddaughter Hazel; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Angleton of Wood River; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Paula Gentry; and two brothers, Terry and David Angleton.

Memorial visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at Paynic Home for Funerals. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton at 10 a.m. Friday, May 23, with inurnment to follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the Bob Angleton Youth Scholarship Fund, which is through the Village of East Alton Park & Recreation and provides an opportunity to play sports to underprivileged kids in the community.
