Marie Alice "Mickey" Steele (nee Sage) passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025. She was born on September 12, 1932, in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of James and Marie (Peacock) Sage.
She married Raymond Guy Steele on November 1, 1950, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He preceded her in death on October 15, 2006.
Mickey led a long and interesting life in the Alton, Illinois, area, raising four children. She was Alton's first parking meter maid. She was a special education teaching assistant in the Alton School system for over 30 years. After she retired, Marie was a volunteer at St. Anthony's Hospital gift shop for 15 years and served a term as president of the volunteer's association. Another passion she had was making baskets (over a hundred), and selling them for over 10 years at the Edwardsville Farmers Marker.
Survivors include her two daughters, Mary Renee (Joe) Pellegrino and Laura (Keith) Kraner; a and son, Coleman (Linda) Steele. Mickey has eight grandchildren, Tony Pelligrino, Carrie Becker, Nathan Steele, Damon (Michele) Steele, Spencer Steele, Ryan Steele, Amanda (Greg) Jansen, and Chad (Carrie) Kraner; and seven great-grandchildren, Aubrey Ball, Mason Steele, Cameryn Steele, Collins Steele, Ben Kraner, Alex Kraner, and CeCe Jansen. Additional survivors are her niece, Diana Simmons; and a nephew, Larry Sage.
Mickey was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ray; and her son, Mark, in 2019; and a brother James "Jimmy" Sage.
A family memorial will be held.
Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto is assisting family with cremation rites.
