Richard Dan Winnett, Esquire, passed away peacefully at Evelyn's House Hospice Center in Creve Coeur, Missouri, on July 7, 2026. He was 73 years old.
Richard Dan was born on April 3, 1953, at Saint Francis Hospital in Litchfield, Illinois. His parents, David R. Winnett and Jacqueline Louise Winnett (Adams), welcomed their son and took him home to 404 Park Ave., Gillespie, IL, to rendezvous with his older brother, David A. Winnett.
In 1958, the Winnett family moved to Wood River, Illinois, where Richard Dan attended Lewis and Clark Intermediate School and later graduated from East Alton/Wood River High School. While in high school, Richard Dan became a fairly decent baseball player and followed the St. Louis Cardinals' every move. Dan was also in the drama club and acted in several plays.
The debate team was his passion and where he honed his skills in public speaking and navigating a good argument. Southern Illinois University, Carbondale was the place Dan earned his undergraduate degree in liberal arts. Following graduation, Dan worked on the Mississippi River as a deckhand on a riverboat. He spent his time off in Jamaica preparing himself for law school.
Returning to Southern Illinois University, Richard Dan earned his Juris Doctor degree and graduated summa cum laude. He began a very successful career as an attorney. During that time, he married Margaret McGrady, and they welcomed their son, Cyrus B. Winnett. Most of Richard Dan's career was in the durable medical equipment field. Serving as in-house counsel for Greystone Medical was among his many accomplishments in that field.
Returning to the Alton area, Richard Dan married Monica Moffet, his childhood sweetheart. They lived happily together for many years. Richard Dan is survived by his wife, Monica Moffet; his son, Cyrus (Katy) Winnett; and his grandchildren, Rowan and Ashford Winnett. He also leaves behind two brothers, David (Sharon) Winnett and Douglas Winnett, along with several nieces and nephews, a fabulous collection of friends, and loads of cousins.
