Alan J. Mathews, 67, of Freeburg, IL, born April 4, 1958, in Belleville, IL, passed away peacefully Friday, June 6, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Alan worked as an auto technician for over 40 years and worked at Meyer on Main for 18 years. He was a member of ABATE motorcycle and rider rights organization of Illinois, St. Clair County Chapter for 34 years. Alan enjoyed restoring and riding motorcycles. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, boating, hunting, and watching NASCAR. He also enjoyed relaxing by having a beer and a cigarette. Alan loved helping his friends and family members with their vehicles.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Samantha Mathews; his mother, Hazel, nee Barkau Mathews; his son-in-law, Billy Thompson; his father-in-law, Robert Conaway; two sisters-in-law, Inez “Sam” Presley and Kay Conaway; and a nephew, Andrew Rudy.
Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Robbin Mathews, nee Conaway; his daughter, Sarah Thompson; his father, Joseph “Joe” (Judy) Mathews; five siblings, Terry (Brenda) Mathews, Steve (Donna) Mathews, Sue (Earl) Rudy, Rich (Judy) Mathews, and Sharon “Sis” (Ray) Meng, two grandchildren, Maddison (Dylan) Schneider and Matthew Thompson; his mother-in-law, Alveria Conaway; his brother-in-law, Mike Conaway; many dear nieces, nephews, and friends; and his cat, Chopper.
