Denzil Dyer

Denzil W. Dyer, 94, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at San Gabriel Memory Care in Godfrey.

He was born in Roxana, IL, on March 4, 1930, the son of Russell Earl and Martha Helen (Ruyle) Dyer. Denzil married Dolores E. Franke on October 15, 1949 at the Roxana Nazarene Church. She preceded him in death on March 5, 2018.

Denzil worked for Shell Oil Company in Wood River as an engineer field supervisor. He relocated to Mobile, Alabama to continue working for the company. He and his wife, Dolores spent 40 wonderful years in Mobile and Orange Beach, Alabama, staying there to enjoy retirement before moving back to Bethalto. 

He was a member of Roxana Nazarene Church where he and Dolores were very active in leadership including church board, youth leaders and Sunday school teachers. Denzil was very involved in the planning and building of the Nazarene Church in Roxana. While living in Mobile they were members of Mobile 1st Church of the Nazarene. When his children were younger, he was the President of PTA and active with the Junior Achievement of Alton for many years. Denzil and Dolores were members of an antique auto club in Mobile for many years. More passions of his were flying planes and traveling the world with Dolores.

Survivors include his children, Jeffry (Susan Mendyk) Dyer of Bethalto and Sheri (Jay) Shoff of Swansea; a brother, Lovell Earl "Bud" Dyer; four grandchildren, Kyle (Kelly) Dyer, Mark Dyer, Kelli (Randy) Goodwin, and Scott (Mandy) Shoff; and five great-grandchildren, Macy, Chloe, Sophie, Colby, and Brenna.

Along with his parents and wife, Dolores, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Dyer; and a sister-in-law, Jane Dyer.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m., at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Pastor Jay Shoff will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.

Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto is assisting the family with final arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to Roxana Church of the Nazarene.
