Jean Hurley passed away on February 1, 2025, at the age of 78 at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, surrounded by family.
Jean was born November 25, 1946, in Carrollton, IL to Kenny and Mildred (Byrd) Bailey. She was raised on the family farm in Hamburg, IL considered the “Westside”. This farm is now the home of her children and the place where they are raising their families. Growing up on the farm, Jean raised many different horses. She frequently enjoyed trail riding and horse shows.
Jean graduated from Calhoun High School in 1964. Soon after graduation, she began working in Springfield for the Secretary of State. She then moved home and began working at the Bank of Calhoun County, retiring in 2011 after 45 years of service. While working at the bank, she was blessed to make lifelong friendships with customers and coworkers.
In 1970, she married the love of her life, John, and he survives. Over the years they have made great memories with their many friends and family. Jean organized many trips for large groups from Calhoun to attend various NASCAR races. These trips were enjoyed by many, who continue to share stories and amusing memories.
Jean loved to mow the yard, even if the yard just barely needed it. She loved a cup of coffee and the Today Show. Jean was a fabulous cook. Oftentimes, she would eat at a restaurant and then duplicate the recipe at home. She loved trips to the beach and to the Lake of the Ozarks.
She was the best party planner; always ready to talk about what food was going to be served and if there was going to be a drink special. Jean hosted many parties in her home where all the food was cooked to perfection and the decorations were on point. However, she was always ready to investigate the nearest “live” band to rock the night away, dancing with family and friends.
The biggest achievement in Jean’s life came with the birth of her 6 grandkids. She has made many trips through the school pick-up line and back and forth to the babysitters. Grandma’s house was a special place where the kids played and their imaginations roamed. Jean quickly became the ultimate Warrior grandma as the kids started to play sports. She was found in the stands or on the hill, wearing her favorite red and black, cheering loudly or ringing the cowbell. She became the famous “Grandma Jean” to many students in the community by bringing food and drinks to school and participating in sports. She relished in taking care of others and that love ran deep.
Jean loved the community she lived in and supported whatever was happening. She volunteered at many community events and helped with the running operations of the Knights of Columbus. Always willing to help those in need, whether it was a warm dish or a donation.
She is survived by her husband John, son Jeff (Donna) Hurley, daughter Stacey (Andy) Brannan. Grandchildren Taylor and Bailey Hurley and Luke, Jacob, Gus and Max Brannan. Sister-in-laws, Francie and Roberta Hurley. Cousin David Byrd, “favorite daughter” Jackie Baalman and beloved dog, Diesel.
She was preceded in death by her parents Kenny and Mildred Bailey, Brother-in-Laws, Chuck Hurley, Bill Hurley, and Roger Hurley. Cousins John and Jim Byrd. Special Aunt and Uncle, Marvin and Veva Byrd.
Visitation will be at Gress, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin, on Thursday, February 6 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on February 7 at St. Norberts Catholic Church in Hardin. Burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
