Wood River City Council Meeting on Jul 1, 2024

July 1, 2024 | 6,571 views

In this meeting, Rusty Lee raised concerns about the trash along Highway 255 and Highway 143, emphasizing that the majority of the trash is hauled to the Roxanne Landfill from Missouri. He detailed how each trash truck represents about 1,300 customers and highlighted the issues with the netting on these trucks, which often fails and causes litter on the roads. The cleanup efforts by Madison County cost taxpayers about $40 a bag, totaling $250,000 appropriated in 2023 and $100,000 in the past year. Rusty discussed his personal cleanup efforts under the Illinois Adopt Highway Program, where he has collected about 280 bags of trash over 60 weeks.

Pastor Jim Landry expressed support for the city manager, mayor, and city council members and raised concerns about the TIF process and the slow progress of redevelopment projects in downtown Wood River. He emphasized the need for more accountability among landlords and better maintenance of properties. He also highlighted the importance of parks and the need for attractive playground equipment to attract families to the area.

Stephanie Schley shared her frustration about a recent accident on Eaton where her husband's truck was hit for the second time in three years. She advocated for more stop signs and a reduced speed limit on Eaton and Whitewall, emphasizing the safety of residents and the high traffic on these streets.

The council approved several sponsorship agreements for the Wood River Recreation Center, including with State Farm Insurance Agent Mike Vanistock, Shelter Insurance Agent Mark Smith, Wood River Donut and More, Franchise Sports Bar and Grill, and Attic Treasures Resale Shop. Additionally, the council approved requests to seek bids for sealing city-owned parking lots, concrete sidewalks at various locations, and hydro-excavating.

A proclamation was approved declaring July 12, 2024, as Behavioral Health Day in recognition of Behavioral Health Alternatives Incorporated of Wood River's 40 years of service. Linda from Behavioral Health Alternatives was personally congratulated and a certificate was presented to her for the organization's significant contributions to the community.
