David Wegener

David  L.  “Homer” Wegener, age 86, of Godfrey, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017,9:15pm at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. He was born January 22, 1931 in Alton and is the son of the late Henry F. and Mary T. (nee: Walters) Wegener. A 1949 graduate of Marquette Catholic High School in Alton, He was drafted by the New York Giants to play baseball and serve as catcher.  He later served his country in the United States Navy in the Korean War and was a member of V.F.W. Post #1308 in Alton. He was was co-owner of the family business Wegener Grocery for many years. He married the Shirley A. Christopher.  She survives. Surviving in addition to his wife: Five Children: Jeannie, Robert, Nancy, Barbara, and Meg Wegener. Four Step-children and their spouses:Jerry (Sheri) Ramey of Godfrey,Larry (Diane) Ramey of Big Horn, WyomingPatty (Jason) Priebe of Boulder, ColoradoChris Ann (Bill) Jones of Chesterfield, MissouriA sister: Mary Malone of GodfreyA sister-in-law: Fran Wegener of GodfreyNine Grandchildren: Kelsey Jones, Ryan Jones, Conner Jones, Remy Jones, Kylon Priebe,Emily Light, Matt Schillenger, Sam Light.Four Great-Grandchildren: Melina Schillenger, Mariah Schillenger, Madelyn Schillengerand Max LightMany nieces, nephews, other extended family and many friends.  In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother George Wegenerand by a sister: Charlotte Schneider.  Visitation will be Friday, June 23, 2017, 9:00 a.m. until the time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Father Steve Pohlman as Celebrant.  Interment will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.  Military honors will be provided by the Ritual Team of VFW Post #1308.  Memorials may be made to a memorial fund of one’s choice.
