Carl Markovitch

Carl T. Markovitch, 89, died at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2019 with his three children by his side.  Born April 19, 1929 in Wood River, he was the son of Ignatius and Lura (Brodie) Markovitch.  He was a faithful member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton for over 68 years.  Carl graduated from Marquette Catholic High School in 1947 and was a very proud Army veteran.  He was active in St. Vincent DePaul Society, a life long member of Knights of Columbus and an avid Notre Dame fan. He was employed by Standard Oil, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and in his retirement drove a bus for the Madison County Transit (MCT).  On April 7, 1951 he married the former Betty Smith in Alton.  She preceded him in death on May 17, 1994.  Surviving are three children, Don Markovitch (Lou Ellen) of Springfield, IL, Ann Henkhaus (Vic) of Wood River, and Jeanne Rynders (Tim) of Godfrey, grandchildren: Rebecca Elliott (Mike), Brian Saenz (Kristen), Rachel Waters (Brandon), Danny Rynders (Justine), Jenna Rynders (Chad); great grandchildren: Elizabeth Butkus (Ben), Samantha Elliott, Maddie and Katie Saenz, and Eli and Simon Waters and a special nephew, Joe Markovitch.  Along with his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee and his twin Carroll as well as many family members and dear friends.  Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2019 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton.  Father Jason Stone will officiate.  Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey with full military honors.  Memorials may be made to Marquette Catholic High School or SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church.  Online guestbook and information may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
