Jerry John Phelps Sr., 86, of Godfrey, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born on November 18, 1937, in Waverly, the son of the late Clyde A. and Melba (Nixon) Phelps.
He married Claudette Needham in February of 1955. She preceded him in death in 2021.
Jerry was a butcher by trade, managing the meat department of several different grocers throughout his career. He enjoyed drag racing, motorcycle racing, and dirt bike racing, having 100’s of trophies to show for it. Jerry was a great mechanic, always working on his own vehicles and making sure they were the fastest around. His family will always remember how hard of a worker and great provider he was.
He is survived by his son Jerry Phelps Jr. of Godfrey; grandchildren Amanda Josefowicz and Clyde (Whitney) Phelps; great grandchildren Pete and Paul Phelps; sisters Martha (Rayford) Raby and Margie (Dan) Graham.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and daughter Victoria Voght.
Visitation will be held from 10 am until the time of funeral service at 11 am on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Anderson Family Funeral Home in Brighton.
Burial will follow at Loomis Cemetery in Chesterfield.
