Alice “Oopie” Kraushaar, 89, passed away at 11:29 a.m., on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Scott County Nursing Center in Winchester.
Born on February 19, 1935, in Arkansas, she was one of nine children of the late Harold W. and Florence H. (Dawdy) Newton. Oopie graduated from Roodhouse High School, beginning a life marked by hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family and friends, alike.
She married Charles Kraushaar in 1953, and together they shared a lifetime of love and cherished memories while raising their five children. Charles preceded her in death, but their bond and the family they built remain a testament to their devotion.
Oopie worked for many years at Anderson-Clayton in Jacksonville, where she earned the admiration of her colleagues and broke barriers as the plant’s first female foreman. Later she owned and operated the Hunters Horn Tavern in Carrollton for over 30 years. Her time at the tavern was more than a career – it was a way of life. Acquaintances became friends, and friends became family, as Oopie’s warmth and generosity made the Hunters Horn a home for so many.
Oopie was the epitome of love and devotion. She was a hardworking, selfless mother and grandmother who always put her family first. To her, family wasn’t limited to blood; it included everyone she welcomed into her life. Her door was always open, whether for a meal, a visit, or simply to be a listening ear. Her loyalty, compassion, and acceptance left a lasting impact on everyone she met.
Surviving are four children, Vicki (Gary) Bushnell of Roodhouse, Joe (Melissa) Kraushaar of Winchester, Gail Wells of Hillview and Charles “Chuck” (Leah) Kraushaar of White Hall; her foster-son, Jerry Whorten of Mt. Sterling; 26 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth “Kenny” (Sally) Newton of Hillview; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Philip; four sisters, Gwen, Isabel, Lillian and Catherine; and three brothers, Gordon, Harold “Tuffy” and Thomas “Tom”.
In accordance with her wishes, no public services will be held.
