Greg R. Shaw, 71, of Belleville, IL, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Born on February 11, 1954, in St. Louis, MO. Greg, lived a life full of curiosity, compassion, and quiet dedication to those he loved.
A devoted husband, father, and friend, Greg’s love for the outdoors was foundational to who he was. In his younger years, he found joy in hiking, fishing, and camping—interests he developed through his time in the Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He had a natural gift for storytelling and a kind heart that led him to help others, often without needing to be asked.
Greg retired as a Geospatial Scientist with the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. He was a proud member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, where he formerly served as a board member, and remained active with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. One of his weekly joys in retirement was gathering with long-time friends for a good meal and better conversation.
Whether he was tending to his garden, watching birds, or spending time with his beloved dog, Sophie, Greg found peace in life’s simple pleasures. But his greatest joy came from being with his family.
Greg was preceded in death by his father, Elmer R. Shaw, and his brother-in-law, Kevin Elliott.
Greg is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Laura A. (née Fellner) Shaw; his children, Emily A. Shaw (Josh Meyer) and John F. Shaw (Angelina Caride); his mother, Bernadine (née Bott) Shaw; his sister, Kimberly Shaw Elliott; and his niece, Anne Shaw Elliott (David Franklin).
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Gateway Regional Home Health for their compassionate care and support during Greg’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Belleville Area Humane Society, a cause close to Greg’s heart. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.
