Nancy Ballew

Granite City 06/26/2025

Nancy E. Ballew, 74, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Christian Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on September 20, 1950, in St. Louis, Nancy brought warmth and joy into the world that she would share with countless others throughout her life. She was a woman of deep compassion, boundless creativity, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones. On January 20, 1966, in Williamsville, Missouri, she married the love of her life, Chet R. Ballew. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Chet preceded her in death on December 16, 2023, and their reunion in eternity is a comfort to those who mourn.

Nancy proudly served as a secretary with the Madison County Sewer District for nine years before retiring in 1998. Her work ethic, loyalty, and kindness left a lasting impression on her colleagues and community.

A talented painter and passionate crafter, Nancy found joy in expressing her creativity. She also loved gardening, often tending to her flowers with the same care and attention she gave to everyone in her life. Her true happiness, however, was found in the presence of her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, delighting in their achievements and filling their lives with unconditional love. Nancy had a gift for making people feel at home, she never met a stranger and was always quick with a smile, a warm hug, or a heartfelt laugh.

Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chet; her parents, Jess and Dess (Hixson) Wisecarver; her brother, Stan York; her sister, Celia Tinker; and her son-in-law, Cliff Cruse.

She is survived by her devoted daughters, Leigh Ann Cruse and Lynne Ballew, both of Granite City; her treasured grandchildren, Melissa (Denny) Wells, Jennifer Cruse, and Dustin Cruse; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Bryanna, Raeleigh, and Brayden Wells. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends, all of whom will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

A graveside service celebrating Nancy’s remarkable life will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville, Illinois, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.

In honor of Nancy’s legacy, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
