Gregory Paul Kamp, a beloved patriarch of his family, passed away where he loved to be, his home in Golden Eagle, IL at the age of 85.
Born in 1939 in Golden Eagle, he was the youngest of 10 children born to Tobias and Dora (Hagen) Kamp.
His early school years were in Golden Eagle and then formative high school years in Nebraska living with his sister Winifred. This is where he learned his love and talent for farming as well as played high school football. After returning to Golden Eagle, he met his wife Agnes (Carpenter) of nearly 65 years.
They were married on January 17th, 1960. They had four children Robert (Lisa), Daniel (Eddea), Kathy and Jane (Jeff); along blessed with 7 beloved Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, Greg leaves behind countless nieces and nephews, neighbors, and friends who will miss him dearly. He had a welcoming smile and never knew a stranger.
Greg started working at the Glass Works and then spent 39 years at Laclede Steel. He and Agnes built their house on the Carpenter homestead after the births of Robert and Danny. As they grew their family, so did their home. Greg worked shiftwork tirelessly at the steel mill and then would come home to farm. After 35 years of shiftwork, he planned his next career move by planting 3,000 peach trees... this grew into a family business of over 40 years well known as Kamp’s Orchard.
He had no idea what this new venture would mean to his family and everyone we’d meet along the way. Greg showed many teenagers the value of hard work and a job well done! His work ethic, determination and pride will never be forgotten and can be seen in every life he’s been a part of.
