Sylvia Diane "Sug" Chandler, 72, died unexpectedly at 9:54 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2025 in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.
She was born in Carrollton, Illinois on January 16, 1953, one of four children born to the late Alfred Paul and Viola Frances (Griffin) Godar.
A lifelong Jersey County resident, "Sug" graduated from Jersey Community High School.
She was a woman of impeccable taste and appearance, which suited her perfectly as a cosmetologist and hairdresser for many years, retiring from Family Hair Center in Jerseyville after many years of building her clientele and enriching her life with the many friendships she gained along the way. Early in her career, she had also served as an instructor for Benton's School of Cosmetology in East Alton.
She married David Lee Chandler on March 20, 1974 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and together they shared 50 years of marriage until his recent passing on October 1, 2024.
The center of "Sug's" world was her family, and she treasured them all. She had a heart of gold and a smile that truly represented the joy she had for all of them. Even in the last couple years, after experiencing the tremendous loss of her daughter and husband, she still made sure her family was taken care of, and made acutely aware how much they all meant to her.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters in-law, Keith and Tara Chandler of Holiday Shores and Chad and Marti Chandler of Jerseyville; her grandchildren, Izabella and Alexandra Golley, Christian, Chanclee, Channing and Cheyanne Chandler, Logan (Anna) Chandler, Zachary and Aiden Chandler; one great granddaughter, Palmer Blake Chandler, and another great grandson due in two weeks; a brother and sister in-law, Dwain and Roberta Godar of Eldred; and two sisters and a brother in-law, Wanda Groppel and Theresa and Richard Killion all of Jerseyville.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Heather (Chandler) Golley on December 25, 2022.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Martin Smith officiating.
She will be laid to rest in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Memorials may be given to the Holy Ghost Catholic Church Altar Society, in recognition of their hard work and dedication.
